Another option would be to cut a large piece of paper the size of the space you are covering and mark out places for knobs, keyholes, etc and draw your pattern on the paper before the furniture. I divided the number of stitches by 2.5 to find out an approximate number of. To determine the stitch size I wanted I counted how many stitches I needed for the longest part of the design (in this case it was vertical). Id say my stitches are about 1/2' x 1/2'. You really have to eyeball it and decide based on your stitch pattern and space, which is why I recommend drawing in pencil first. You could do this with any simple cross stitch pattern that will fit in your space. I started at the bottom corner and just drew one stitch at a time (in pencil) working my way up and over.
